A VISIT TO BAGAMOYO HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL
SITES
About 70 kms north of the commercial
capital city of Tanzania, Dar es salaam, popular known
as the heaven of peace lays a small township that for centuries has failed to
grow up. It is literally peacefully lying in ruins, heading towards becoming a
recipe for archeological tourism. The township is literally known as lay your
heart-Bagamoyo. Here you will get a chance to see the historical terminal of
the slave route from the heart land to Zanzibar.
Lovers of archeology would find themselves engulfed by the Kaole ruins where
you will hear a legend why it was called Kaole. This area is believed to be the
first mainland port established by the Arabs in 19th Century linking India, Persia, Indonesia and Arabia who came for ivory, rhino horns, leopard skin and
the like. You will see also a “holy grave” of the descent of prophet Mohamed
(SAW) and the “love grave” for the husband and wife who loved each other beyond
death. Among other attractions, the town offers the first church in East Africa,
the first German burial place and the place where the body of the late Dr.
Livingstone was laid before shifted to Zanzibar.
Bagamoyo, therefore, stands extremely important in the history of the slave
trade in East Africa and Central Africa and is the origin of Arab and European
penetration of Africa’s interior.
A TRAIL THROUGH THE NATURAL FOREST OF PUGU
Through this trail you will visit the wild
places that respects the environment, educates the visitors and benefit the
local community. The forests lie in about 26kms south west of Dar city. This
forest is the remains of the coastal forests which are extended from Kenya to
Msumbiji. This forest is unique because of the concentration of the rare
natural vegetation in one area. This forest is among the oldest in the world,
it has 10 million years. The Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania (WCST)
has developed a trial which shows the natural vegetation which changes as you ascend
from the low lands to the highlands. During the trial you will see natural
streams, rivers, dams plenty of birds and at your lucky you can spot some
animals. You will pass through ‘darajani’ a place which is respected by the indigenous
as a worship place. Moreover, ‘daraja la Mungu’ is a unique attraction as a
bridge created by three stones over the stream known as Gogo. In fact, this mountainous
guided tour is a splendid hike on biodiversity.
A DHOW TRIP ON AROUND OCEANIC ISLANDS
Have you ever thought of sailing like Dr.
Livingstone? This is a marvelous execution by which you will sail to the nearby
islands. A trip to Bagamoyo’s uninhabited island will give you a chance to

fear. He persuaded the indigenous inhabitants through gift giving and build in
1865 his palace at the now Bavarian style railway station. Materials for
construction came from Zanzibar and the island on the entrance to the habour. We will take you to all these
